Pubs in Kings Langley and St Albans welcomed senior citizens and anyone on their own to watch Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral last month.
The Saracen’s Head and The Black Boy both opened from 10.30am on Monday, September 19, showing live coverage of Her Majesty’s funeral and offering guests free coffee, soft drinks and sandwiches.
The pubs also donated 50p from every drink sold on the day and raised £400 to be shared between The Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes. Steve Nelhams at Skyline Roofing also donated, bringing the total to £500.
Peter Dillingham, landlord of both pubs, said: “We knew many places were closing and felt we were in a position to give something back to the community, one which had truly supported us over the last few turbulent years.
“We had a lot of elderly people, who would have been on their own, and a few parents with children, who came and celebrated the life of a woman who, for a lot of us, was like a second mum.”
