SWIM SUPERSTAR: Freya’s incredible journey to raise money in memory of her beloved cousin

Hemel Hempstead schoolgirl Freya Booth has taken on the Swimathon 2023 Challenge to raise money in memory of her cousin Vicki Eastaugh, who sadly passed away from breast cancer aged just 26.

The 13 year old is hoping to raise £4,980 for an international voluntary project in 2025, where she’ll be involved in community projects such as constructing community playgrounds and cleaning water supply systems in Costa Rica.

Speaking to Hemel News, her proud mum Charli Okey said: “I’m surprised she wanted to do it; it’s such a feat. After the first lengths, I thought she’d say it wasn’t for her, but she’s doing really well. She’s so motivated.”

Freya started her Swimathon in June, where she began with 50 lengths. She is aiming to swim 1,360 lengths of Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre pool, which is equivalent to swimming the English Channel.

Vicki had completed a similar Swimathon just weeks after finishing chemotherapy, which inspired Freya to take on the challenge.

Charli added: “They were very close, like sisters, from the day Freya was born.

“Freya’s going to reach her target quicker than expected. She’s digging deep and I’m so impressed with her!”

Freya has lots of fundraising ideas, such as selling handmade greetings cards, getting sponsorship from local businesses, organising cake sales, and performing tasks for her neighbours such as mowing lawns and cleaning cars. Her aim is to raise £4,980 for the four-week expedition in Costa Rica.
