SUPER SHAMMI: Northwood mum shares son’s journey to help people with learning disabilities

Published on: 3rd July 2025   |   By: Isaac Barbosa   |   Category: Featured

This month, NORTHWOOD&RUISLIPnews spoke to Northwood resident Sonal Kapoor about her son’s journey from struggling with his learning disabilities to helping others.

Sonal’s son, Shammi, was raised in Northwood Hills up to the age of six. The family then moved to Dubai.

She said: “For Shammi, growing up as an expat child in Dubai presented unique difficulties. Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and depression, he faced the added challenge of not being able to read properly until he was 20 years old. These struggles made it hard for him to connect and contribute, whether at home, at school, or within his community.”

Shammi’s turning point came when he was 19. A clinical psychologist referred him to an intensive brain training program, which saw Shammi start “to conquer his daily challenges”.

Curious about the methods that had changed his life, Shammi asked for an internship at the training program’s centre. From here, Shammi became a professional brain trainer and established his own cognitive development centre, Brain Abilitiez.

Sonal added: “His dedication and entrepreneurial spirit were recognised globally in 2018 when he was named Dubai and the UAE’s Student Entrepreneur Champion at the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards.”
