Prisha Tapre, 16, from Watford, has become the youngest member of Watford Swimming Club (WSC) to swim across the Channel.
At 2.10am on Wednesday, September 4, the young swimmer started from Samphire Hoe, not far from Dover, and landed just south of Cap Gris Nez 11 hours and 48 minutes later. As part of the challenge, Prisha is raising money for Akshaya Patra, who feed over 2.1 million schoolchildren every day in India and the UK.
Jeremy Irvine, open water coach at WSC, said: “We are all extremely proud of her achievement. During the swim, she didn’t once complain. Prisha demonstrates what can be accomplished by training hard and persevering. She’s the youngest and fastest WSC member to complete this incredible challenge, joining master swimmers Paul Lewis in 1994 and myself in 2014.
“A huge thanks to parents and all the swimmers who have encouraged and swam with Prisha, especially the 2023 Channel relay swimmers who joined her in the long training swims. It’s been an honour and privilege to be part of this amazing team who have helped Prisha’s dream become a reality. Thank you for all your generous donations!”
