Residents have been left “upset” after racist, crude and offensive graffiti was painted on the walls of a Garston underpass.
Symbols such as the Nazi swastika, foul language such as the ‘f-word’ and racial epithets such as the ‘n-word’ have been daubed along the sides of the subway in Cow Lane. The underpass is currently being prepared for a refurbishment with a natural theme.
Hertfordshire county councillor Steve Cavinder stated that the subway is regularly used by children attending the nearby Grove Academy and their parents, with them becoming concerned about how the incident may affect their children’s wellbeing.
This comes not long after artwork placed in another subway, near the A405, was also vandalised with graffiti. This art had been made by students at St Michael’s Catholic High School and Parmiter’s School.
Speaking on the incidents, cllr Cavinder said: “Across Watford a lot of work is being done to upgrade its various subways. It’s disappointing to see that already these two subways have been vandalised. I encourage residents to report any incidents they see.
“We mustn’t let the minority who do this, spoil it for the majority who will enjoy the walk through these subways’.”
