Mr Bob Blackman, MP for Harrow East which includes Stanmore, urged smokers to ditch the cigarettes on national No Smoking Day last week. A long time campaigner and Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health, Bob is very passionate about the cause. He joined Brent students for an event run by Cut Films which highlighted the health benefits of giving up on No Smoking Day, and also lent his support to the annual health campaign run by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), which last year encouraged a million people to quit smoking, this year taking on a ‘V for Victory’ theme. Bob, said: “While No Smoking Day last week was a very good encouragement for smokers in Harrow East to give it up, it is never too late to make an attempt to quit. Hundreds of thousands of other people across the UK are making the attempt and quitting smoking leads to a never-ending list of benefits.” Over 10 million UK adults smoke, including 13 per cent of adults in Harrow East, but UK figures show two thirds of smokers want to give up. More than 100,000 people in the UK die from smoking related causes each year, including around 22,000 from heart and circulatory diseases and 45,000 from cancer.
