SOLAR CANOPY: Innovative plan could produce cheap renewable energy for Croxley

Published on: 24th May 2024   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

Solar canopies could be installed at seven car parks run by Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) to provide local businesses with cheap and renewable energy.

The idea began when Croxley councillor Chris Mitchell reportedly read in the news that France had legislated that all open-air car parks should have solar panels installed. At a TRDC meeting in June 2023, cllr Mitchell asked whether the community car park in Croxley might follow suit.

A year later, cllr Mitchell has now brought Grand Union Community Energy (GUCE) on board to spearhead the project.

Originally, the team contacted solar energy businesses with just the community car park in Croxley in mind, but to make the project financially viable, it was decided that other car parks across the district would also be involved.

Now, seven car parks across TRDC will undergo a feasibility assessment expected to take five to eight months, starting this month, with regards to potentially installing solar canopies.

GUCE spokesperson Sarah Burgess said: “We want to get the local community involved as much as possible. We will hold workshops and presentations so that residents can get involved. Each solar canopy will produce cheap renewable energy widely owned by the community.

“We’ll also be looking at scale and seeing if other local communities can benefit.”

Cllr Mitchell added: “It just goes to show that if you plant a seed, it does start growing!”
