‘SO PROUD’: Abbots football team ‘determined to rise to next level’ after reaching final

Bedmond Youth FC’s U9s team made it to the league final in their first season together.

This season saw five new players join the existing four players.

Keiron McKay, the team’s new assistant coach, spoke to ABBOTSnews about the team’s journey.

He said: “[New lead coach Anthony Wilson and I] had to start from scratch, learning the skills of being a football teacher while making it fun, engaging and most importantly achieving a team spirit while developing their strengths and weaknesses on and off the pitch.”

The team lost six out of their first eight games, marking a challenging and “disappointing” start to the season.

Keiron said: “Then it clicked, the players got to know each other, stepped up the effort and started to form a bond, while we (the coaches) pushed the technical training and fitness aspects while making fun in a competitive scenario.

“As the coaches, we are so proud of the boys’ progression and achievements they’ve made this year and feel that we have done them justice, while learning the skills to be a coach on the job.”

Unfortunately, the team lost the final, but their impressive progression is far from over.

Keiron added: “By losing the final, this has only made the team more ambitious and determined to rise to the next level and gain recognition.”
