A man who was found guilty of the rape of a young girl has been sentenced today to 16 years imprisonment.

Omar Hasan, aged 26, formerly of Borehamwood, had previous been found guilty of multiple offences, including rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, causing to a child to engage in sexual activity, sexual activity with a child, causing a child to to watch a sex act and exposure.

He was convicted of all charges following a two-week long trial on October 1st, having been remanded in custody since then.

Judge Caroline Wigin, in addition to the 16 years prison sentence, also ordered that Hasan serve an additional five years on licence, meaning he can be recalled to prison any time up until 2042.

He must also follow the rules of an indefinite Sexual Harassment Protection Act, meaning he will be unable to contact the victim or her family or be in the presence of any female below the age of 18.

He will be on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Hasan was first arrested in October 2020, with the offences occurring at a Borehamwood address between September and October last year.

The victim told investigators he had coerced her into watching pornography before assaulting and raping her.

In a victim personal statement the mother said: “Omar has ruined my life. He groomed me and my wider family. I walked in on him abusing her. I felt numb for months afterwards. It has been mental torture. I did not sleep for months.”Judge Wigin told him: “You were found by the mother in the act of sexually abusing her daughter. You have been found guilty by a jury, yet it is clear that you continue to deny your offending and show utterly no remorse.“You targeted this child from the very outset. You showed her pornography on your phone and sought to blame out on others. “

Several officers and investigators from the constabulary’s Joint Child Protection Investigation Team worked to gather evidence and secured the changes against Hasan.

Lead investigating officer on the case, Detective Constable Jean-Pascal Beecroft said:

“Hasan’s actions are truly sickening, and my thoughts remain with the victim who has seen and been subjected to things that no child ever should. Thankfully she has an excellent support network in place, which I hope will help her to move forwards.

“Hasan is a dangerous paedophile who manipulated his way into a position from which he could groom the young victim. He has blamed everyone but himself for his actions. Now he is behind bars and will always be subject to restrictions aimed to help safeguard young people.

“We pledge to always investigate every report we receive, pursuing predators and securing justice for victims.”
