Cheers rang out at the Harlequin in Watford when the Mayfield Belles, thought to be the UK’s oldest cheerleading squad, performed for shoppers last month waving their pompoms high with pride.
Saturday, December 13, saw the squad, made up exclusively of women between 70 and 87 from Mayfield Retirement Village, take centre stage with a two-minute routine.
By challenging age-based stereotypes, the Mayfield Belles gave residents a performance they will remember.
Harlequin Watford centre director Simon Plumb said: “It’s great to shine a light and support local talent, and we are pleased to provide a platform for their first public performance.”
The group had around eight weeks of dedicated rehearsals ahead of the show and admitted feeling nervous beforehand.
One of the Mayfield Belles, 82-year-old Marilyn she told WATFORDnews: “Who would’ve thought from an idea people would want to see us?”
