Amersham school ran their annual ‘Be Real’ week September 30, to teach the children the importance of self-love.
‘Be Real’ is a national movement which unites individuals to change attitudes and behaviours to collectively build a body confident nation.
The weeks theme is discussed in lessons and assemblies to get the children to reflect on their own behaviours and ideas.
Alongside the campaign the school ran a competition for students to create policies that they think would improve the school thinking in line with the Be Real principles.
In 2022 the girls were encouraged to come to school not wearing any makeup for the whole week -staff were also encouraged to take part!
The following year had a focus on boy’s mental health, which included ‘Boy’s Biggest Conversation’ introduced to support young men’s mental health.
Speaking to Amersham News Lead Teacher of Health and Social Care Lynda Kelly, said: “The no makeup week wasn’t to highlight issues with wearing makeup, but to try and encourage students not to feel as if they ‘need’ to wear as much makeup, increasing self-esteem and self-image in our young girls.
“The key mantra was ‘flaws into flawless’, educating students about how to accept our bodies for what they are.”
