The garden at Pratt House care home in Amersham was transformed into a beach for residents to enjoy on Friday, August 9.
The home has 29 residents of mixed care requirements, including those with dementia.
Residents asked staff about the potential of taking a trip to the beach for one last time. However, due to issues with transport and the needs of the residents, this would sadly be impossible to pull off.
Speaking to AMERSHAMnews, care home manager Alice Dunning said: “An important piece of work we are currently looking at is around the goals and aspirations of our residents. When we discovered that many of our residents wished to go to the beach one last time, we thought why don’t we bring the beach here?”
The care home’s garden was transformed thanks to a delivery of five tonnes of sand, beach equipment and homemade decorations.
The residents enjoyed a fish and chip lunch, served in newspaper wrapping; entertainment from a ukulele band; and accessible sandcastle making, so that even the residents who could not sit on the ground could join in.
The residents also reminisced about their happy memories of the beach from their youth and memories of holidays with their children.
The great British weather held out and the 25°c sunshine was the cherry on top.
Alice added: “It was a brilliant day.”
