SCHOOL SPAT: Kings Langley mum hits out at primary school for ‘hindering’ son’s education

A Kings Langley woman has accused a local primary school of refusing to give her son a nursery place due to his medical history.

Katherine Blood’s son was born with severe medical issues and has undergone three bowel surgeries.

Katherine was advised by doctors to defer his entry into nursery for a year, meaning he would be four years old when entering nursery. This would allow him time to physically recover.

Delaying entry to nursery is now allowed more regularly thanks to an open letter from the government a few years ago.

However, Katherine was shocked when her son was rejected for entry into the nursery at Kings Langley Primary School (KLPS), saying they could not defer him. This is despite the family having a letter from their son’s doctor explaining their situation.

Katherine said: “When you’re a parent, it’s so disheartening. It’s hindering his education.”

Despite making an appeal, Katherine’s son has now not only been refused entry to the nursery by the school’s headteacher, but also the Board of Governors.

Katherine is also disappointed with the response from staff at the school, stating that their attitude towards her was “short and disinterested”.

A spokesperson for KLPS said: “We’d be very happy to welcome this child to our reception class, either this year or next, however they are too old for our nursery.

“We have looked sympathetically at this application, due to the medical issues involved, however our Board of Governors has confirmed that our current admissions policy is not to accept a child of this age into the nursery, and it is for this reason, not any medical issue, that we have refused the place.”
