SAVED: Popular little library in Berkhamsted offered new home following break-in

A local landlord has saved a beloved little library in Berkhamsted that has helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Three years ago, Geoff Wiggett and his partner Sandra constructed the Brig Lend library at the end of their garden, backing onto the Grand Union Canal. Since 2021, the library has been a fantastic community asset, allowing residents to share books with each other.

The wooden wonder has also raised more than £4,000 for the Hospice of St Francis.

Unfortunately, the Brig Lend library has regularly been targeted by thieves. Following a robbery in March in which the library’s security box was broken, Geoff and Sandra made the difficult decision to close the venture.

Geoff said: “We obviously live in times when people don’t respect that charities need help and are willing to cause damage for the sake of a couple of quid.”

However, following major outcry from the community, the landlords of The Rising Sun pub, Nigel and his husband Mark, stepped in. They have offered Brig End a new and secure home outside the pub, just a short walk along the canal from the library’s original location.

Nigel said: “We’ve already had a fantastic response from our neighbours around George Street!”

The new branch of Brig Lend at the Riser will be constructed in the coming weeks.
