SAND ANGELS: Mum and daughter from Chalfont St Peter brave Sahara to raise funds for hospice

Two Chalfont St Peter residents will brave the heat of the Sahara desert to raise funds for a hospice in recognition of the care they showed to one of their family members.

Rebecca Gaskell and her daughter Imy, who previously featured in the November edition of CHALFONTS&GERRARDSCROSSnews, will arrive in Morocco on Saturday, March 9.

They will traverse 60km of desert over three days before spending two days supporting street children and the elderly through a local project.

Rebecca said: “There will be tents, but you’re actively encouraged to sleep under the stars.”

Rebecca’s daughter Grace passed away in 2020, aged 14, after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Since then, Rebecca has thrown herself into raising funds in Grace’s memory. This has included forming the Angel Mums group, consisting of seven mums who have all lost children to brain cancer. So far, the Angel Mums have raised more than £76,000.

Through this latest challenge, Rebecca and Imy are raising funds for Helen & Douglas House, a hospice which provides care to children with life-limiting and terminal conditions and their families. Grace was transferred to the home at the beginning of 2020.

Speaking of their experience, Rebecca said: “Grace absolutely loved it. The staff are complete angels; they looked after her so well.

“These are precious places which need our support.”
