St Albans Cathedral and St Albans Police have announced that all three of the eggs laid at the cathedral’s peregrine falcon nest have been damaged.
On Wednesday, April 2, the cathedral was delighted to announce that the peregrine falcon pair, Boudica and Alban, had welcomed three eggs at the nesting tray on the roof of the cathedral.
This is the fourth year that the pair have returned to the roof for mating season.
However today (Monday, April 7), news was shared online that a “sad incident” had resulted in “damage” to the three eggs.
A spokesperson for St Albans Cathedral shared to their Facebook page: “Today, a very sad incident occurred at our peregrine falcon nest, resulting in damage to the eggs.
“We are currently working with the Rural Operational Support Team at Hertfordshire Constabulary, and a person is assisting the police with their enquiries. The live cam will remain offline until further notice.”
A spokesperson for St Albans Police said: “We are aware of livestream footage circulating involving peregrine falcon eggs at St Albans Cathedral and we are working with partners at St Albans Cathedral and the National Wildlife Crime Unit to look into the incident.
Throw the book at him. Watched this pair of peregrines last year. Was a fantastic experience seeing the eggs being laid, hatch and seeing the chicks grow until they fledged. Was pleased to hear the falcons had returned and laid eggs, only to read they’ve been damaged.
