A resident of Station Road, Radlett, has contacted Hertsmere Borough Council (HBC) over the difficulties residents face when trying to park near their homes.
In a letter seen by RADLETTnews, the resident, who holds a permit to park on the street, highlighted three key problems.
Firstly, he questioned the existence of bays designated for shoppers on the street, given that it contains no commercial properties. The resident suggested that HBC should “permit residents to use these shopper bays without penalty, especially during peak residential parking hours”.
Next, he criticised restrictive resident parking time limits, which currently permit non-residents to park in resident bays after 6.30pm. This reportedly “disproportionately disadvantages those… who return from work during the evening and find that all available bays have been occupied by non-permit holders”. He suggested the resident-only hours operate on a 24-hour basis.
Finally, he highlighted residents’ confusion over the presence of yellow lines outside homes at the lower end of the road, where “parking bays could be provided”.
The resident added: “Taken together, these issues suggest that the current parking strategy is not only inadequate but actively detrimental to residents.”
A spokesperson for HBC said: “Station Road is part of the Radlett Controlled Parking Zone. This prioritises resident parking over other types of parking. There is a finite amount of kerbside space in the street. Yellow lines are kept to a minimum to maximise kerbside parking but where they are in place, they are necessary for safety, and to allow access for properties and businesses.
“The council’s approach to parking controls is resident-led. We log all resident comments and where there is significant concern from residents, we will review provision and suggest alternatives.”
