A Pinner pupil is celebrating after winning one of the top prizes in a popular annual challenge for primary schools.

Jian Nedum Onwukwe, eight, from Pinner Park School has been announced as a winner of Make Your World Bigger 2018, a video challenge designed to keep children learning during the summer holidays.

When Jian learned of his success he was overjoyed. He said: “I couldn’t believe that there were so many presents in the box. My favourite present is the telescope.”

Year 3 pupil Jian was one of 10 national winners, and was presented with his prize at a special school assembly. Jian received a huge Discovery goody bag, packed with fun gifts and gadgets including a VR headset, telescope, butterfly garden and more.

Organised by Discovery Education, the competition encourages pupils to join a 30-day film adventure, watching a daily Discovery video clip to learn something new. Nearly 8,000 pupils took part in the challenge, which is now in its third year.

Answering questions along the way, and enjoying fun activities such as den building and stargazing, Make Your World Bigger encourages children to be curious about the world around them using films about geography, technology and space to spark their imagination.

Mrs Maureen Acquaye, Jian’s teacher last year, said: “Jian is an outstanding student who loves to challenge himself on a daily basis. He came across the competition with his family and embraced the challenge straight away. He told me that it took a long time to do but he thoroughly enjoyed completing each stage of the competition on a daily basis.”
