BIG CHANGES: Proposal submitted for major redevelopment of Edgware town centre

Published on: 12th August 2024   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Developers have submitted a £1.7billion plan to build thousands of homes in Edgware, with an estimated completion date of 2036.

After knocking down the bus station and garage, developers Ballymore and Transport for London (TfL) aim to build 3,365 new homes, as well as a larger Sainsbury’s and a new cinema.

The plan, designed by Howells, has proven controversial, with residents arguing that the demolition of the bus garage would decimate London’s public transport. Members of campaign group Save Our Edgware have also called into question the fire safety of the project.

A spokesperson for Save our Edgware said: “TfL are proposing to demolish the bus station and replace it with a series of bus stops without public consultation. This seems detrimental to the currently well-designed transport interchange.

“Reducing public parking by 70 per cent does not support the suggestion of a revitalised Edgware as a shopping and entertainment destination.”

A spokesperson for Places for London said: “The Edgware project will deliver nearly 3,500 new homes, including 1,150 affordable homes, creating hundreds of new jobs and £1.7billion of investment in regenerating the town centre.

“The local community will absolutely have opportunity to voice their opinions on the design of the transport interchange.

“The safety of residents and visitors is of paramount importance. The design of the bus garage continues to be developed and we remain in ongoing dialogue with London Fire Brigade and other stakeholders.

“We will continue to work closely with the local community and stakeholders as we deliver a thriving future for Edgware.”

Barnet Council confirmed that it has received the application.
