PROMOTING CYCLING: Plans to transform Watford Cycle Hub unveiled

Published on: 17th December 2019   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

As part of Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor’s manifesto commitments to sustainable transport, Watford Borough Council is investing in a new building for the Watford Cycle Hub.

The Cycle Hub is a non-profit community-based cycle centre located at The Pavilion, Chaffinch Lane, next to Holywell Community Centre.

It has been providing a range of essential cycle related services to support Watford cyclists, including cycle repair and maintenance courses and cycle training since it was formed seven years ago.

A recent survey carried out on the building concluded that it was no longer fit for purpose so the council agreed to replace it with a larger bespoke modular building which will enable the Cycle Hub to expand its core services to the community.

The new building will provide a community café and social space along with a larger workshop and a dedicated office. It will also enable the Cycle Hub to cope with increasing demand on its services and deliver enough room to showcase reconditioned bikes and an expanded range of accessories.

Work started in November with completion expected in March 2020. While the works are taking place, the team are housed in temporary accommodation on-site and the Cycle Hub continues to offer cycle repairs, cycle training and guided rides but for bike donations during this time please contact the team on 01923 223 994.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “When I was elected, I made a commitment to investing in our Cycle Hub to give them brand new state of the art facilities. I’m really pleased to see work starting on this.

“The Cycle Hub do a great job in helping to promote cycling in our town and provide an invaluable service to people in Watford. I’m determined to make sure that we are a more sustainable, greener town.

“This investment comes at the same time as introducing a new Cycle Hire Scheme and On Demand Bus Service. I can’t wait to see the finished improvements at our Cycle Hub.”

Director Kate Jenkins said: “We’re often referred to as ‘the best kept secret in Watford.’ The new development will really help to put us on the map and the improved facilities will mean we are able to serve the local community even more effectively.”
