An Olympian from St Albans has given the thumbs up to a mural in Harpenden which features her portrait.
Phoebe Gill, who is a member of St Albans Athletics Club, competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics at just 17 years old.
Now, her portrait appears on a mural on Station Road which features key people and events in the area’s history and celebrates current residents.
Through collaboration with Network Rail and the Harpenden and District History Society, MurWalls street artists were commissioned to bring the design to life on the walls of the subway.
The mural was unveiled on Thursday, August 22, and depicts Phoebe, who attended St George’s School in Harpenden, alongside comedian Eric Morecambe OBE and rugby players Owen Farrell, George Ford and Maro Itoje.
The project was funded by Hertfordshire County Council and was based on an idea from local resident Alison Bourke.
Attending the unveiling were county councillor Phil Bibby, the CEO of Paralympics GB David Clarke, and Eric Morecambe’s daughter.
Cllr Bibby said: “This is another great example of us working in partnership in our quest to improve our subways, providing a better environment that encourages more walking and cycling, which in turn will go towards making Hertfordshire cleaner, greener and healthier. My thanks to all involved in this fantastic project.”
