An Apsley train station worker has rejoiced after the government U-turn on plans to close ticket offices.
In August, Savita, who has worked at the Apsley train station for 15 years, was campaigning and handing out flyers to spread the word about the government’s plans.
Savita pointed residents towards a Transport Focus and London TravelWatch consultation, which would go on to receive 750,000 responses.
In the wake of such overwhelming public opinion, the government reneged on its plan on October 31.
Transport Focus said: “Those responses contained powerful and passionate concerns about the potential changes at stations. Transport Focus would like to thank all those who took the time to take part.”
On Twitter, Huw Merriman MP said: “Today Secretary of State Mark Harper and I asked train operators to withdraw their plans to close ticket offices. We were always clear that if closures were to go ahead, the highest quality of service must be maintained for all passengers.
“Having engaged with accessibility groups, passengers and my fellow MPs throughout, it was clear that the proposals did not guarantee this.
KingsNews dropped in to see a delighted Savita during the weeks that followed.
She beamed: “People are so happy that we’re staying open! The main thing is the customer service side of things. Some people don’t know what they’re buying and need our help. Some people were getting so upset because they don’t know how to use the machines, the elderly people and disabled can struggle.
“People kept telling me, ‘oh, you’re famous’ after appearing in KingsNews, but it was all of us! People power, I call it!
“Every day, customers go by and say well done for keeping it open. Young ones, older ones. It makes you feel wanted!”
