OUR FAMILY: Northwood resident proud of documentary series celebrating family diversity

Published on: 24th April 2021   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Northwood resident who worked as an executive producer on a BAFTA award-winning observational documentary said she is proud to see diverse families celebrated in the show as it returns for its new series.

The award-winning Cbeebies series Our Family stars families up and down the country and for the first time ever the series will include a same sex-parent family.

The show focusses on eight sets of children from a range of backgrounds, celebrating diversity in its different forms.

Sixth Sense founder and executive producer Sallyann Keizer, who sits on MIPCOM’s Diversity Board and presents globally on Diversity and Inclusion in children’s programming, said she is proud to see that Our Family represents a diverse range of backgrounds.

She said: “Every child deserves to see themselves reflected in the television they watch and I am incredibly proud of Our Family’s track record in representing the huge range of backgrounds and cultures of children in this country, particularly in light of the recent curriculum changes on diversity and inclusion.

“I’m also proud that we are highlighting the lives of same sex parent families and am thrilled to have found the most perfect family to feature in the next two series.”

The first two episodes focus on Henry, a cheeky creative five-year-old who lives with his Mummy, Mama and his little sister Sophie.

The episodes follow the family on their day-to-day routines with Henry’s mums both working as nurses who love football, musical theatre, singing and performing together at home with the family.

The shows celebration of diversity does not stop there however, with a complementary film for the Cbeebies Grown Ups social channels, providing information to parents and carers who are looking to be more inclusive.

In partnership with BBC Teach, an additional six Our Family films have also been created exploring diversity further through themes including blended families, same-sex partnerships, respect and trusted relationships.

These films provide content in the line with the latest guidance on diversity and inclusion, introduced into the primary curriculum in September 2020.

Our Family series five and six were commissioned by former BBC Children’s Head of Content Cheryl Taylor.

The series producer is Ruth Mills with Michael Towner Commissioning Editor for the BBC.

The BBC Teach films were commissioned by Rebekka Campbell with Freya Watson as producer for Sixth Sense. Sallyann Keizer is executive producing all the content for Sixth Sense.

The new episodes of Our Family started on April 5, head to BBC iPlayer to watch the new series.
