Organ donors urged to make their wishes heard

Published on: 29th August 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

NHS Herts Valleys CCG has pledged to help save lives by supporting Organ Donation Week, September 3 to 9.

The national NHS campaign is asking people to talk to their families about organ donation to increase the number of people whose lives can be saved or transformed through an organ transplant.

Locally, the NHS across Hertfordshire and West Essex is also asking people to sign up to the organ donation register as part of a series of pledges to celebrate the NHS turning seventy this year.

Nationally, three people die every day in need of an organ. Families will always be approached about donation if organs are suitable, but knowing their loved one wanted to donate helps support the family’s decision at a difficult time.

Around 464,000 people in Hertfordshire are on the Organ Donation Register while approximately 110 people are waiting for a transplant. More and more families in Hertfordshire are saying yes to organ donation but there is still an urgent shortage of donors.

Dr Nicolas Small, a GP and chair of Herts Valleys Clinical Commissioning Group said: “We need more people in Hertfordshire to talk about organ donation in order to increase the number of lifesaving transplants.

“Only one third of adults in England have told their partner or family they want to donate, despite 8 out of 10 people saying they would be willing to donate or would consider it.

“Sadly, many opportunities are lost every year because families don’t know if their loved one wanted to be a donor or not. We can change things, but we need your support to get people talking. Please sign up to the organ donation register to pledge your support for the NHS in its seventieth year – and tell your family your wishes.”

Anthony Clarkson, Interim Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant said: “Words save lives. Please, tell your family you want to save lives through organ donation, because it could be the difference between life and death for someone else.”

Millions of people are already on the NHS Organ Donor Register, join them today and tell your family you want to save lives.
