First-time publicans are ready to give a once popular but now derelict pub a new lease of life.
The Old Fox Public House, located on School Lane near Garston, is a Grade II listed 17th century building. Before it closed its doors eight years ago, the pub was a firm favourite with many Garston residents, ramblers and dog walkers.
Husband and wife duo Danny and Julie Harding put in an application to purchase the historic pub, but didn’t expect to be successful.
They were first attracted to the pub for its land, as Julie is a keen horse rider.
Speaking to GARSTONnews, Danny said: “When it got accepted, we were quite amazed and then we thought why not?”
Danny, who is semi-retired from the construction industry, plans on refurbishing the building mostly himself.
He said that it will be an interesting project and that he is looking forward to “building something for the community”.
“With a bit of luck, it might be open in late spring or early summer,” Danny said.
The couple have been amazed by the positive feedback from local people and surprised at how well-loved it is.
In May 2024, St Albans City & District Council rejected a proposal to change the use of the building from a pub to residential. The council recognised the importance of the building remaining a pub.
