NEW PRIORITIES: Northwood’s council calls on government to plug funding shortfall

The Conservative-led Hillingdon Council has called on the new Labour government to alleviate funding pressures on local authorities.

In a full council meeting on Thursday, July 11, councillor Ian Edwards, Leader of the council, presented a motion welcoming the new government and outlining seven priorities for Northwood and the wider Hillingdon area.

The first request was for full government funding to help the council support the many asylum seekers in the local area. The second request was for grant funding to meet the increasing cost of adult/child care support, while the third was a call to ring fence the support grant provided to local councils to help them during the cost-of-living crises.

The fourth was to allow councils to veto regional transport initiatives that could limit motorists’ freedom, the fifth was to oppose the reclassification of the green belt, and the sixth was a commitment against a third runaway at Heathrow Airport.

The seventh and final request was to retain the cap on council tax increase that can only go higher if approved by a referendum of local residents.
