NEW LOOK?: Bushey school applies to convert chapel into dance studio

A Bushey school is seeking to repurpose its “redundant” chapel into a dance studio.

St Margaret’s School is looking to make three key changes to the chapel, which is currently only used on a “very occasional” basis, on its campus at Merry Hill Road.

An application made to Hertsmere Borough Council outlines the plan to remove all but one of the pews in the body of the Chapel, as well as the pulpit and lectern. The organ would be retained.

A dance floor would also be fitted, as would three light fittings from the ceiling. Both introductions would ostensibly not leave any lasting mark or damage.

Agents DLA Town Planning state that the chapel has not been used for religious purposes for many years and the space is now redundant for this original purpose.

They continue: “The proposed works will have minimal impact on the character or appearance of the interior of this part of the listed building. All the existing architectural attributes that identify the original purpose of this part of the listed building will remain intact and identifiable, thus the impact will be negligible.”

St Margaret’s School Head, Lara Péchard, said: “The application is part of a process of continued improvement of our facilities, providing students with opportunities for learning and personal development. Our chapel has been a place where the school can come together for reflection, celebration and creative expression for over 100 years. By preserving the integrity of the space, but also integrating the chapel into the active use of the wider school buildings, it will continue to be used in this way for assemblies, concerts, and performances. We are committed to preserving our magnificent heritage, out Waterhouse designed buildings whilst evolving to meet talents and interests of our pupils.”
