Abbots Langley’s Shannon Courtenay became the WBA world bantamweight champion after defeating Australia’s Ebanie Bridges on a points decision at the Copper Box Arena in London.
Each judge scored the contest in Courtenay’s favour, with the cards reading 97-94, 98-92 and 98-92.
Courtenay, nicknamed The Babyface Assassin, took a cut to the side of her head early on in the bout but managed to fight on and make the most of her opponent’s swelled up eye in the latter rounds.
After being crowned as the winner, Shannon said: “I can’t put it into words – unbelievable. We worked so hard and for someone who has genuinely turned her life around it shows people can achieve anything.
“I boxed nicer, and I had the cuter shots. I kept throwing the jab out. My jab won the fight – you could see that from her eye.”
Bridges congratulated Courtenay on Twitter after the fight. She said: “What can I say. I didn’t get the W but I fought my heart out. I couldn’t see for the last three rounds, but I have no quit in me.
“Congrats to Shanny, it takes two to tango, and I really hope we did what I said we would and showed that pretty girls can fight hard too. I hope it was entertaining for everyone.”
