Gerrards Cross Town Council made a unanimous decision to oppose the building of a new sports facility at a meeting on Monday, October 21.
In May, Gerrards Cross Community Association (GXCA) supported plans to turn their “little-used” tennis courts on East Common into courts for padel, a form of tennis played on a smaller court.
This original application was withdrawn after the town council and residents objected, but was re-submitted with minimal changes in September.
Sarah Williams is an allotment holder and member of GXCA who lives close to the site.
She told CHALFONTS&GERRARDSCROSSnews: “If it goes ahead, the court will probably be the closest one to residential properties in the UK.
“We think this will have a very negative impact on neighbours’ mental health.”
Local resident and actor Robert Lindsay was also in attendance at the meeting and in his objection states: “With the proposed opening times of 365 days of the year, many of us would find life intolerable with its noise, lighting and the amount of incoming traffic to serve it.
“I urge like many of my fellow neighbours for the council to refuse this application and let us all carry on enjoying the genuine sense of community and tranquillity in the town we chose to live.”
The 51 objections on the plans include concerns around noise and opening hours.
Sarah added: “We’re still urging GXCA to drop their support in light of the ongoing opposition. This is just not the right location for outdoor padel courts that have known issues with noise nuisance.”
GXCA has been contacted for comment.
