A standout student from a Northwood school has made history as the youngest participant in the prestigious Global Prompt Engineering Championship, held in Dubai over the summer.

Zara, a Year 9 student at St Helen’s School, represented not only the school but also the UK in the international competition, at the age of just 13. She stood out from the crowd against thousands of entries from over 100 countries, and competed alongside world-leading programmers, artificial intelligence (AI) experts and creatives.

The Global Prompt Engineering Championship is a fiercely competitive event, organised by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence and the Dubai Future Foundation. The open competition invites generative AI enthusiasts from around the globe to showcase their skills and creativity.

Although the event is usually for those aged 18 and over, an exception was made for Northwood student Zara due to her exceptional abilities. She competed in the literature category, combining her love for storytelling with her fascination for AI.

Zara explained: “I was interested in AI and liked linking it with other things like literature. So I thought it would be a great opportunity to participate.”

Over the course of the competition, Zara showcased her skills in prompt engineering, a field focused on designing and refining the input for AI models. As a crucial skill for future technology leaders, prompt engineering is typically dominated by adults, but Zara took on the challenge with confidence and was recognised by her peers at the competition as a young prodigy.

A spokesperson for St Helen’s School said: “Zara’s participation is a testament to the limitless potential of our students and the global recognition of young talent, regardless of age, that is open to them. Zara’s achievement marks the beginning of a promising future, not only for her but for all our students, and we take immense pride in fostering an environment that encourages girls like Zara to excel.”
