A skilled young member of Garston Bowls Club has gained national recognition in a recent competition.
Dylan Martin, now aged 18, was just 17 years old when he won the Bowls England Men’s National Two Bowl Singles on Thursday, August 14.
Talking to Garston News, Dylan’s dad David said: “The first two games got off to a slow start, but Dylan came through to win these. He played really well and was in control.”
The win was even more special as it took place on the same day as David’s late mum’s birthday, who sadly passed away in July.
Dylan follows in David’s footsteps, as he is also a keen player and a fellow member of Garston Bowls Club.
David explained: “The social side is fantastic – you can win or lose but regardless, you can go and have a nice drink and a chat afterwards. You get a change of scene too as we play on different greens.
“It has been brilliant for our wellbeing and the bowls community is really supportive for anyone going through a bad patch.”
Both of Dylan’s brothers, Thomas and Jake, also play the sport. The trio, together with another young player, recently won the Watford and District Gala at Garston.
Dylan is no stranger to success, having become the youngest winner of the Herts County Two Bowl Singles in 2023.
Earlier this year, he was also shortlisted for the Rising Star of the Year (male) award at the 2025 Bowls England Awards.
Asked what he hopes to achieve next, Dylan said: “I’m hoping to win another title, maybe with my dad one day, as well as playing for England.”
Three of Garston Bowls Club’s teams made it through to this year’s county and national championships. Their members previously won the National Senior Pairs title in 2023.
