SHUT DOWN: Abbots Langley cycle lane proposals denied by council leader

Published on: 22nd September 2025   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Claims of a proposed new cycle lane in Gallows Hill in Abbots Langley have been shut down by the Leader of Three Rivers District Council (TRDC), councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst OBE.

The proposals were drafted back in 2023 and adopted by TRDC this July. These were later opposed by Abbots Langley Conservative councillors and a petition was set up to object to the plans for a cycle lane, as reported in the August edition of Abbots News.

According to TRDC’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), the cycle lane would have gone along Old Mill Road, Lauderdale Road, and Gallows Hill towards Kings Langley station.

Speaking to Abbots News, councillor Ian Campbell said: “The council’s Leader should be ashamed of misleading the public in this way. It is baffling to see the council’s Leader claim that up is down and black is white.

“This was consulted on before Conservative councillors were elected, and Lib Dem councillors never flagged it up to residents – so almost nobody knew about it.

“The council debated the cycle lane in July – Conservatives laid out what the Lib Dems’ proposal means, and not a single council official or Lib Dem councillor disagreed – in fact, they defended it on the basis nobody objected in 2023.”

Cllr Giles-Medhurst has since responded to these comments: “The council is NOT proposing a cycle lane along Gallows Hill. Gallows Hill is already used by cyclists, but the road is far too narrow for a formal cycle lane, and none is planned.

“Every council is required to produce a LCWIP.

“This isn’t about painting lanes on every road; it’s about identifying where walking and cycling could be made safer.”
