May’s update from Croxley Bowls Club

Published on: 11th June 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

One of my geography teachers said we don’t have a climate. All we have is weather!

Well, the last two weeks of April proved that all right. 28°C on the 19th April down to 6°C on the 30th April.

It was reasonable weather for our opening drive which fared quite well on the 22nd (see picture).

You can see that we are bowling from large mats which we use to protect the green when it’s very wet.

We had friendly games against Harefield (away) and Bovingdon (home).

Lost both but, hey, its early days yet. Our competitive games start soon so we will knuckle down and concentrate.

Two postscripts from the indoor season.

Our Vets red team lost the Watford and District Vets league by one point to Rickmansworth/Herts despite some heroic play from John Hurley and Les Harland.

Well done Avril Harland and Betty Ottoway (Herts) who reached the semi-final at Nottingham of the National Ladies pairs (over 60’s) losing 17-14 to the eventual winners from Redcar.

Our Vets red team started the season with a loss to the newly promoted Potten End Blue. In football as well as bowls, newly promoted teams usually start well. We meet them again in the last match of the season. We’ll see what they’re like by then!
