MAJOR MOVES: Northwood cancer centre could relocate to Watford under new proposals

A public consultation is being prepared regarding proposals to relocate Mount Vernon Cancer Centre from Northwood to Watford.

The renowned treatment centre could soon move to the Watford General Hospital site, which is set to be upgraded into a new state-of-the-art facility for a projected opening of 2030.

The decision to move was discussed at a meeting of Hertfordshire County Council’s (HCC) Health Scrutiny Committee on Thursday, May 16. It was stated that a consultation would likely come during the second half of this financial year.

According to NHS East of England, who are the proposing the move, there are a number of reasons as to why the centre needs to relocate.

On their website discussing the proposals, they state: “The limited support facilities at the site creates challenges for the patients and staff, resulting in many patients receiving treatment in a number of different places because of this.

“As cancer treatment becomes more advanced and as demand for cancer treatment grows, this is becoming less sustainable for patients at Mount Vernon.”
