Local MP welcomes Hertsmere Holocaust survivor to memorial in first speech as Minister

In his first speech as a Government Minister, Oliver Dowden, Minister for Implementation and MP for Hertsmere, welcomed Mr Harry Spiro, Holocaust survivor and Radlett resident to the opening of Holocaust Memorial Day events in Westminster.

The event was organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) and took place earlier this month in the Churchill Room in HM Treasury on Whitehall. Speaking afterwards, Mr Dowden said:

‘It was a privilege to welcome local Radlett Holocaust survivor, Harry Spiro, to lead the Holocaust memorial event in the heart of government.

‘I was particularly honoured to be doing so in my first speech as a Minister, and in the room where Sir Winston Churchill addressed the nation on VE Day.

‘It is vital that we as a country and a community remember the Holocaust and never forget what history has taught us.’

Holocaust Memorial Day itself took place on Saturday January 27 and this year’s theme was the power of words. Mr Dowden has been a constant supporter of the HET since his election and until his promotion to his Ministerial position served as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for British Jews and as an Officer of the Conservative Friends of Israel.
