Berkhamsted has gained its newest and youngest street champion, who is dedicated to keeping the town clean.
Residents walking along the High Street may have noticed the posters that now hang from lampposts, encouraging people to pick up their litter, keep the area clean and help ‘save the Earth’.
The creators of the posters, four-year-old Rueben and his family, got in touch with Berkhamstednews when they saw one of their posters in the magazine with a story about Dacorum’s street champion litter pickers. Rueben has now applied to join the scheme and is eagerly awaiting his litter picking equipment in the post.
Mum Emma Elsaesser said: “It all started when we read a book called Stella and the Seagull, which tells the story of a seagull that gets poorly from eating plastic. The girl in the story organised a beach clean-up party and that’s what gave Rueben the idea.”
For his birthday, Rueben has asked for a litter pick party, and has invited his class at Victoria Church of England Infant School to join in.
Emma said: “So far, there will be 18 children and their grown-ups. Everyone will bring their own black bag and there will be cake for everyone at the end.”
Asked why he has taken such an interest, Rueben said: “It’s important to save the Earth because we don’t want to lose all of our creatures.”
