LITTER ISSUE: Berkhamsted resident urges more to be done to fix litter problem near canal

Published on: 30th March 2021   |   By: Geraint Roberts   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Berkhamsted resident has highlighted the ongoing litter issues along the canal near the industrial estate on Northbridge Road.

James Howe, who regularly visits the area while going out for a jog, has urged some of the company owners to do their bit to help clear up their debris.

He has pointed out that a swan has used the area as a local nesting site (pictured), with the nest being built with plastic and a collection of rubbish.

James said: “Do we really want out wildlife living amongst this? People just walk past and don’t even care or notice. Has it become accepted because seeing litter is commonplace?”

“Being a local resident to Berkhamsted for nearly 18 years now, as every year goes by, the growing issue with our canal and the litter that plagues the paths and banks just doesn’t seem to be abating.

“That’s with myself and some regular stoic local residents doing their part and picking up litter as they walk along for the sake of it. Where would we be without those people?

“I would offer to clear it up myself once the swans have fledged and left the nest if they would take away the rubbish.”
