LIKE OLD TIMES: Watford Council poll shows residents want The Harlequin to return

Published on: 20th October 2020   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

Following the news that Watford’s Intu shopping centre is under new management there has been much speculation about the name of the centre formerly known as The Harlequin.

A poll conducted by the Watford Liberal Democrats on Twitter over the weekend has found that a majority of Watford residents want the centre to be renamed ‘The Harlequin’.

To date, of the 396 responses, 82 per cent have voted for the shopping centre to be renamed The Harlequin.

The name ‘The Harlequin’ holds significant weight with many people in Watford and those that have grown up or lived in the area for a long time continue to refer to the shopping centre by its former name, despite being rebranded with the Intu takeover in 2013.

Councillor Dawn Allen-Williamson said: “I completely agree with the public on this, the name ‘The Harlequin’ is important to many of us in Watford and it makes sense to change the centre back to its original name.

“It also seems fitting that we have conducted this poll as the name of the centre was originally chosen by the public in a local competition in 1990. It would be nice to see the shopping centre come back around full circle.”
