JUSTICE SERVED: Man sentenced for defrauding Ruislip elderly resident in scam

A rogue trader was sentenced last month for defrauding an elderly Ruislip woman out of thousands of pounds after carrying out unnecessary and substandard home repairs.

Lawrence Cash, 30, of Brookwood, appeared at Isleworth Crown Court on Monday, October 6, after admitting to fraud by false representation and breaches of consumer protection laws.

The offences related to work he carried out at the home of 86-year-old Mary Naylor in 2022.

Cash approached Ms Naylor offering to clean her driveway, before claiming further urgent repairs were needed to her chimney, roof and boiler.

He charged over £11,000 for the work, which an independent surveyor later found to be unnecessary.

Distressed by his repeated visits, Ms Naylor contacted Hillingdon Council’s trading standards team which launched an investigation.

Cash was handed a two-year suspended prison sentence, 200 hours of unpaid work, and 15 rehabilitation activity days. He was also ordered to pay £11,600 to Ms Naylor’s estate and £187 victim surcharge.

Councillor Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s cabinet member for community and environment, said: “Sadly, the victim in this case sadly passed away before getting to see Cash brought to justice, but I hope this result brings some comfort to those who knew what she’d gone through.”
