Five members of the local community were handcuffed, arrested and locked up at Ruislip Police Station earlier this month as part of Michael Sobell Hospice’s ‘Jail and Bail’ fundraising event. The event was part of their Hospice Care Week awareness campaign. Those who took on this crazy challenge were asked to raise as much money prior to the event and then spend time in a police cell with a mobile phone and a list of contacts until further cash was raised and they could be released on bail. Participants were handcuffed and arrested by the local police outside Michael Sobell Hospice in Northwood and taken in a police van to Ruislip Police Station where they were fingerprinted, photographed and then put in one of the cells. The amount raised so far in total by all five participants is over £4,000 and sponsorship is still coming in. Inspector Rob Bryan, Hillingdon North Neighbourhood Policing said: “Michael Sobell Hospice does so much for people locally suffering from life-limiting illnesses and we the local police are proud to help their charitable endeavours whenever we can. Jail and Bail was a unique experience for those being banged up. Luckily they all raised some money so nobody was kept in a cell overnight!” Five inmates took part in the challenge including one from Northwood. Lindsay O’ Callaghan, owner of Atelier Hair & Wigs Hairdressers at Mount Vernon Hospital – was locked up for a hair-raising incident at her salon which she wanted to get to the root of. She said: “I used to take part in the Ladies in the Night Walk for MSH but am no longer able to participate so I wanted to try something different instead so signed up for Jail & Bail. I love raising money and MSH is a great local cause which is based at the Mount Vernon Hospital site where I work.”
