INSPIRING JOURNEY: Cancer survivor raises £79,000 with Mount Everest challenge

A man from Radlett has helped to raise nearly £80,000 for charity by reaching Base Camp of Mount Everest, soon after overcoming prostate and lung cancer.

Nigel Henry, Ben Henry, Matt Glazer, Sam Castle, Brad Dryer, Daniel Robey and Lee Clements completed the trek to raise money for The UK Sepsis Trust after Daniel lost his sister Melodie to sepsis.

They also raised money for Bright Futures UK, a charity which supports young people with a long-term illness during their education.

Nigel was given a stage four prostate cancer diagnosis in 2018. Following successful treatment, he was then diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2022.

But a cancer diagnosis was never going to stand in the way of Nigel’s inspiring journey.

In fantastic news for Nigel and his family, he had been given the all-clear by the time he began the 5,364m ascent.

Nigel’s daughter Sophie Glazer told RADLETTnews that it was the prospect of reaching Base Camp that spurred him on to reach his goal.

Sophie said: “We were all apprehensive about their sleeping conditions. None of them had ever slept in a tent before; it was very extreme.”

Nigel, aged 60, was 10 years older than the others on the team and began to struggle towards the end of the climb.

But in a showing of Nigel’s determined spirit, he soldiered on and the group reached Base Camp on day 10.

Sophie added: “I’m very proud to have him as my dad.”
