An 84-year-old will publish his debut novel on August 28 based on his life experiences and adventures across the world.

Richard Nye, who has lived locally for 50 years, has written a book called The Evolution of Charlie K, inspired by his time in Papua New Guinea and the jungles of Borneo in his early 20s.

The powerful story is based on 18-year-old protagonist ‘Charlie K’ who lives within a remote tribe and the story vividly describes his unexpected progression from a society that is still living in the past and that has no understanding of western culture to the USA. It questions the meaning of progress in the modern world.

Richard said: “My inspiration for the book is my time in this unique country, largely untouched by western culture. To summarise, the book is about the impact on a man suddenly thrust from an undeveloped stone age culture into a consumer society.”

Richard is now working on a sequel to his book where the reader will follow further adventures into Charlie K’s life and hopes to draw on his many other significant life experiences in his next work.
