INSIDE OUT DAY: Bushey pupils turn clothes inside out for mental health statement

Published on: 17th February 2020   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

Pupils at a Bushey dance school did their part for young people’s mental health awareness by holding an Inside Out Day.

Inside Out Day is a new national initiative, where children and adults go to school with an item of clothing inside out during Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week.

Three hundred schools, including The Academy from The Bushey Arena, took part on the week beginning February 3 as a way of making everyone stop and think about how someone may look alright on the outside, but inside they may be feeling sad or worried.

Several Academy students told us their thoughts on the day.

Maddie, 16, said: “It was such an amazing way to spread awareness, especially for the younger students. Usually we try to avoid the difficult subjects with the little ones but this is a great way to make them aware and understand something so important.”

Libbi, 11, added: “I think it’s a great day because people who have mental health issues can feel like they are not alone and feel like people care about them.”

Max, seven, said: “It helped us to know how people are feeling on the inside and that you should always be kind to others as they might not be having a nice day.”

Sienna, 11, said: “It’s a day when we don’t care what others think and we show people with mental health issues that they are not alone and that we are all in it together.”

Savannah, 11, added: “It’s a day to support people who don’t always feel like people are supporting them and helps us to understand what many people are going through. We are letting them know that we care and we are there for them.”
