HELP NEEDED: Girlguiding volunteers urgently needed in Watford to keep units open

Over the past year, Girlguiding leaders have been working hard to keep girls and young women motivated and thriving through virtual guiding, but Watford groups urgently need more volunteers.

9th Watford Guiding unit is now in danger of closing due to lack of leaders and needs urgent help to continue to run services for young people in the town.

Division Commissioner Janet Eavis explained: “Across Watford, we currently have 96 girls on waiting lists for Rainbows, 80 for Brownies, 39 for Guides and 11 for Rangers.”

Anne Johns, leader of 15th Watford Brownies said: “One Guide unit in Watford is closing due to lack of leaders, and we need extra volunteers for other units, especially Rainbows.”

Janet added: “We also need a district commissioner in north Watford – so if anyone is interested in administration and leader support rather than weekly meetings, we would love to hear from you!”

Brownie leader Jacqui O’Connor said: “I love volunteering, even after a day working with kids at school! It’s great to give something back to the community, lovely to work with girls to help ensure they grow up into confident young women.”

Girlguiding CEO Angela Salt said: “The impact the pandemic has had on young people will not disappear overnight. Guiding and other youth organisations have an important role to play in the recovery and continuing support of young people.

“The benefits of volunteering are fantastic – from meeting new people, to gaining skills and knowing that you are making a positive contribution to the lives of girls and young women, at a crucial time.”
