GUILTY PLEA: Hemel Hempstead rapist admits to crimes during court hearing

Published on: 9th March 2020   |   By: Geraint Roberts   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Hemel Hempstead man appeared in Luton Crown Court and pleaded guilty today (March 9) to six offences committed on the same victim, including two charges of rape.

The woman had to jump from a second-floor window to escape the rapist, Zachary Owens, of Lawn Lane, who had abducted and attacked her.

Owens, 26, was a complete stranger, who snatched her from Farmhouse Lane, Hemel Hempstead on January 21, and held her prisoner and attacked her.

They crimes were: Kidnap, assault by penetration, two charges of rape, one of taking a BMW without consent and one of driving while disqualified.

Owens, who was wearing a grey tracksuit, pleaded not guilty to false imprisonment and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutor Simon Wilshire said he would be asking for those charges to be left on the file.

Mr Wilshire, who did not open the case today, said: “The woman suffered an injury to her face and head during the abduction. She jumped from a second-floor balcony to escape her ordeal.

“This was the abduction and rape of a stranger at half past seven in the morning as she walked to work. It is an alarming offence.”

He said Owens had no previous sexual offences but had been convicted of assault with intent to rob.

Judge Barbara Mensah remanded Owens in custody for reports to be prepared by probation, with sentencing due on April 3.
