Chorleywood Parish Council (CPC) is thrilled to reveal the thriving butterfly population recently recorded on Chorleywood Common.
CPC hosted a six-year study of butterfly populations on the Common, which monitored data from 2018 to 2023. The results showed a positive increase in butterfly numbers, which was attributed to “ongoing habitat management efforts on the Common”.
In May this year, CPC shared results collected by their butterfly recorders, who had been given the task to record the different species of butterflies spotted on the Common.
Posting on their social media, CPC said: “Great news! Our butterfly recorders saw 25 per cent more butterflies on the Common when conducting one of their monthly surveys, compared to the same week in 2024.
“A total of 44 butterflies this year compared to 33 butterflies last year. Hopefully this marks the start of a good year for butterfly numbers, noting the sharp decline recorded nationally last year.”
