GREAT EFFORT: 10-man Northwood can’t hold on in narrow defeat

Published on: 4th January 2020   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Northwood F.C

Northwood FC’s poor run of form in the BetVictor Isthmian South Central Division continued this afternoon (Saturday, January 4) as they slipped to an unfortunate 0-1 home defeat to Tooting & Mitcham United.

Chris Rackley made his debut in goal for the Woods in a testing first match for the newbie – the visitors are unbeaten on their travels in the league, while Northwood are on a run of three straight league defeats.

The Woods had the first chance of the encounter in the opening few minutes, when a Charlie Hayford corner was half cleared.

The ball fell at the feet of Eric Lopes who tried his luck from 25 yards, which took a deflection along the way but never troubled the diving James Shaw.

It was end to end stuff during the opening exchanges, with both sides fashioning a number of key chances.

Luke Holness put a great ball across Tooting’s area in the 15th minute but there was no striker to latch onto it.

Almost instantly after, Tooting right back Ahkeem Belford headed on target from a corner but directed it straight at Rackley.

Despite the Woods creating a couple of chances, it was certainly the away side that looked more in control as the first half came to an end at 0-0.

It stayed 0-0 for the majority of the second half, with both sides again failing to capitalise on a number of scoring opportunities.

The game plan changed entirely for the home side towards the end of the game though, as Bradley Kauzeni was given a straight red card for poor tackle just before the 80-minute mark.

Despite the incident, the Woods battled it out and did everything.

They could to stay in the game – but in the 86th minute, they gave the ball away poorly and Tooting substitute Hady Ghandour capitalised to slot past the ‘keeper. 0-1.

The unfortunate result means Northwood sit one point above the relegation zone with 13 points.
