A girls’ football team made up of students from a Croxley primary school have won a regional football tournament, earning themselves a place in the national finals.
The U11’s side from Little Green Primary School will now represent Watford FC at the Premier League Primary Stars U11 National Girls Football Tournament, set to take place at Elland Road stadium in Leeds on June 7.
The squad earned this accolade by first winning the Hertfordshire tournament, competing against 31 other sides from across Hertfordshire, where they were unbeaten, conceding only one goal all day.
Following this, the side went to the East of England regional tournament representing Watford FC, and again managed to get an unbeaten run, before managing to beat the Norwich City FC team in the final, earning their place in the national competition for the second year in a row.
Player Olivia Hutchinson said: “It is an amazing achievement to get this far and to play like we did as a team was unbelievable – this year we think we can win it.”
Fellow player Lily Steele added: “Having had a Watford season ticket since I was three, my highlight was scoring the winning goal in the semi-final against Luton. We played well as a team, all supported each other throughout the tournament and now cannot wait to go to Elland Road for the finals.”
