GIVING BACK: Kings Langley resident ‘emotional’ after community efforts recognised by hospital charity

Published on: 31st January 2023   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Kings Langley resident and keen motorcyclist has been awarded for providing support for others in the local community.

Jon Andrews (pictured far right) was recognised for the work Dacorum Motorcycle Riders, a group that delivers presents to young patients at Watford General Hospital year after year.

With help from the group and close friend Gavin King (pictured centre), Jon has delivered happiness to children at Raise, West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals Charity, about the surprise award.

He said: “Me and my friend Gavin received a call from Emily Theobald who asked us to come in to discuss our next gift drive and then presented us with the certificate.

“I was a little bit emotional; I’ve done quite a lot and delivered a lot of gifts for the kids in hospital over Christmas and Easter. I was quite chuffed.”

Jon added that he wanted to thank Gavin King for all of his support with the community project over the years.

He said: “I couldn’t do it without him; it has gone from strength to strength. I also want to thank all our members for their support and generosity.

“I just want to show that bikers aren’t all bad like people think they are; we do good stuff for the community.”

The group will be completing a number of rides throughout this year. The Easter bunnies on bikes ride will take place on Saturday, April 1; the Halloween ride on Saturday, October 28; and the Christmas ride on Saturday, December 9.

Emily Theobald, senior fundraising officer for Raise, said: “Dacorum Motorcycle Riders have been an incredible support for our hospital charity Raise in 2022. They have been so kind and thoughtful, providing chocolate treats for our patients at Watford General at Easter, and returning with Christmas presents for patients young and old for our Raise a Smile Christmas appeal.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Dacorum Motorcycle Riders for thinking of our patients during what can be a difficult time. We very much look forward to working with them again this year and are looking forward to bunnies on bikes this Easter and for the new rides being planned.”

If you want to get involved in Dacorum Motorcycle Riders’ future drives, you can drop off Easter eggs and other gifts to the Monks Inn or Fryers Inn in Hemel Hempstead.
