GIRL POWER: Huel Tring Rugby’s girls’ teams collect silverware in latest season

Published on: 3rd June 2024   |   By: Panayiota Demosthenous   |   Category: Uncategorized

Huel Tring Rugby are reflecting on an incredible month of victories and new opportunities.

The club, which has players from Tring, Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard, runs U12, U14 and U16 girls’ teams.

The U16s, in particular, had an incredible season, as in April the club became league champions and won the Bucks Cup for the 2023/24 season.

They sadly lost in the East Midlands Cup final, but a great effort saw them win the league completely unbeaten with a bonus point in each game.

However, the club are also thrilled to announce that two of their players, Esme Blake and Verity Pope-Williams, have been nominated to partake in the RFU domestic pathway for U18 girls, the Player Development Group. This means the duo will be prepared to excel in world-leading England teams, boosting their skill development and receiving support both on and off the pitch.

On Sunday, May 12, the club were also delighted to welcome Zoe Harrison, former Tring player and now England Women’s National Rugby Union and Saracens Women player.

Zoe spent the morning at the club taking girls of all ages through their paces as part of an RFU initiative to link professional players to every girls’ team.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Thanks to Zoe for her time and all the girls that attended, some for the first time.”

The club also went on to host their annual Touch Rugby World Cup Tournament on May 13, with players from across the club, including girls and women, representing 20 countries. After a day of incredible rugby, Ireland went on to win the final.

A club spokesperson said: “There was a fantastic atmosphere at the club from early morning until late evening. The day kicked off with the M&J’s awards and then we were swiftly in to the Touch World Cup where 20 ‘countries’ competed six-a-side throughout the day as the sun shone on some glorious rugby.

“The mix of old blokes, very enthusiastic girls, women and juniors on each team was a great success.”
